Answer

How do you use the Recorder's Defrost Input connection?.

 1.  Using the Defrost inputs on all unit types, except R-types before Serial No.SPR01640

In order for the recorder to identify a defrost condition the external circuitry must ensure that a +DC voltage of between 12 and 24 volts (relative to the recorder battery -ve voltage ) is made to appear on the "Defrost" input when the defrost condition exists in the refrigerator.

A simple relay switch connected between either the "Vin" connection or the +Battery connection and the "Defrost" terminal will be quite sufficient.

If the signal to be supplied to activate the defrost feature is derived from another source this is acceptable, provided the voltage is DC and between +12v and +24volts in value and the sources 0v line is connected to the Recorder's -ve Battery cable somewhere in the external circuitry.

  2.  Using the defrost input on R-types before SPR0164

R-types before SPR0164 had only one "Defrost" input and to the right of the "Defrost" input was a "0v" terminal. Connecting the "Defrost" input to the "0v" terminal via a set of voltage free contacts will bring on the "Defrost" condition.

R-type units after SPR01640 have two "Defrost" inputs. The "0v" input is now used as the "Defrost2" input. See operation in "1" above.
